Yes, college is expensive. But, it almost certainly costs thousands a year less than you think.

One of the most damaging aspects of our current economic recession is that families are being led to believe that they can not afford the cost of college. Magazine stories, newspaper stories, and TV news reports go on and on about the high cost of college.

In 2007-2008, tuition at private colleges averaged nearly $24,000 a year; public college tuition was about a quarter of that (for in-state students), and community college tuition cost most students a little under $2,500 annually.

Anyone would be spooked by the high cost of a college education. Whether you’re trying to put your kids through college, go back to school for an advanced degree or take some online classes to further your career, the cost is a major consideration. You’ll be glad to know, though, that help is available.

You can get so caught up in college life that you may overlook the need to plan out your finances. Being too busy with studying, sports and socializing leaves you no time to figure out your money issues.
